The story begins with a general description of "the hunger artist" and then narrows in on a single performer, the protagonist. The hunger artist performed in a cage for the curious spectators, and was attended by teams of watchers (usually three butchers) who ensured that he was not secretly eating. Despite such precautions, many, including some of the watchers themselves, were convinced that the hunger artist cheated. Such suspicions annoyed the hunger artist, as did the forty-day limit imposed on his fasting by his promoter, or "impresario". The impresario insisted that after forty days public sympathy for the hunger artist inevitably declined. The hunger artist, however, found the time limit irksome and arbitrary, as it prevented him from bettering his own record, from fasting indefinitely. At the end of a fast the hunger artist, amid highly theatrical fanfare, would be carried from his cage and made to eat, both of which he always resented.

In this Kafka’s work, Kafka explains the negative effect that industrialization has on art in general. The story explains how the traditional professional suffering was paying well in the last decades, but now people were living in a totally new world. The professional hunger artist seems to be very passionate about his job and sees no need to find a regular job. In the story, the artist barely looks at the clock in the cage, meaning that he does not bother about time. In regular jobs, people are driven by time, and clock is part and parcel of their lives in terms of economics. This shows the negative effects of industrialization on arts and artists. The artists may have great inspirations but continue to ignore their own suffering and destitution. At one point, one can see that the artist is no longer independent. He relies on the impresario to manage the artist’s work. The professional fasting artist no longer uses his free will because the show gets managed by the impresario.

Roxane Gay’s new book, Hunger, is a tremendous and valuable thing: a relentless, shattering exploration of Gay’s appetite for both food and control. Part memoir, part cultural criticism, it reads like a thematically linked essay collection that someone took a fist to. But while the book’s form is fragmented, as a work it is utterly complete. In short, stinging chapters, Gay traces her fatness back to a childhood gang rape and the resulting emotional aftermath, and meditates on themes of trauma, fear, and power.
